Who we are

The GFG Foundation seeks to inspire, empower, and enable young people in industrial communities to reach their life and employment potential.

Our story

The GFG Foundation was established in the UK as a charity in February 2017 to develop the skills needed to help people pursue careers in engineering, metals and renewable energy.

The Foundation developed its first national partnership in the UK with the highly acclaimed Industrial Cadets programme, inspired by HRH The Prince of Wales and delivered by the Engineering Development Trust. By the end of 2020, it is expected the Foundation will have supported more than 4,000 young people through this programme in the UK alone, giving them skills and practical experiences in industrial workplaces.

Since then the Foundation has grown and established several partnerships with a variety of educational institutions, including the Glasgow Caledonian University, Strathclyde University, The University of Sheffield and Arkwright Scholarships.

In 2019, the GFG Foundation expanded to launch its subsidiary, GFG Foundation (Australia), in Whyalla, South Australia. The school programme on offer involves students working directly with employees from GFG Alliance businesses who have the opportunity to pass on knowledge, skills, their passion and expertise spanning a range of industry areas. In 2020, the schools programme expanded as part of a collaboration with the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO).

The Foundation has plans to expand its footprint to Europe, Asia and the USA.

Our founders

In February 2017, Sanjeev and Nicola Gupta launched the Gupta Family Group Foundation (GFG Foundation) as an initiative to develop the skills needed to help people start and continue working in specific industries, notably engineering, metals and renewable energy.

About Sanjeev: Sanjeev is an international businessman and entrepreneur, heading a global enterprise with activities spanning steel and aluminium production, engineering, power generation, banking, property and commodities trading.

As Executive Chairman of the GFG Alliance, he leads a fast-growing $20 billion global industrial group with operations in more than 30 countries. Born into a family of industrialists in Punjab, he was educated in the UK and graduated with an MA in Economics and Management from the University of Cambridge.

About Nicola: Nicola was instrumental in pushing for a charity that would help people of all ages, but especially the young, reach their potential and realise long term employment.

Nicola comes from a finance background, having been treasurer to Liberty Commodities Ltd, a business owned by Sanjeev. Nicola is now Chair of the GFG Foundation and is keen to see the Foundation deliver.
